There is not one sole staff member for each position- e.g there is an editing "team" rather then just one editor. This is to make it easier for everyone and lift the pressure off the individual.If you apply, it is highly likely that you will be successful. Be prepared to give at least one hour a week to Smog.
Running or helping to run a website can give you a warm fuzzy feeling. Like a kitten. And also, you will will be able to practice skills needed for your position. I learnt HTML by playing Neopets back in the day. That goes to show that practice is pretty sweet.
