Single and proud!
By a very lonely year 10 student
The Year 10 Formal is fast approaching and the question on a lot of people's minds is "Who are you taking to the formal?". Why is it expected that everybody has to be paired up for the formal? I understand if two people are going out that they might decide to go together but what about the rest of us? This adds the unneeded pressure to then find someone to go with, that can then cause emotional pain when rejected by someone you really really like. And what does it mean to go with someone to a formal? What is it that you actually do or is it there just as a status thing? It is not like some form of organised dance routine where you dance a specific dance with a partner. It is "free" dance where you can make a fool of yourself with your peers.
Don't worry if you don't have a date to the formal as there are lots of people going single. I will be one of them. And you know what? You can still have a heaps fun time with ALL of your friends and not have the entire night dictated by some female (in my case at least). Go out, live life and enjoy what is left of your childhood.

Agreed! I don't understand why people worry about it, the people who are asking 'Who are you going to the formal with?' and the people that are upset because they're not going with anyone. In this day and age, it totally doesn't matter to go single. You're all going to be with your friends on the night anyway, so what does it matter? In Year 10, all it means is that you go in your date's parent's car, rather than your own.
I didn't have a date to my Year 10 formal, and I had a ball.
I agree with the notion, but it still sounds to me like somebody has been bitten by the jealousy bug. Just do what I'm doing - grab another guy to go with lol.
It's not even a matter just for childhood. The stigma of looking for a partner for life isn't one that everyone feels and certinally isn't an essential part of life.
Had the year 10 formal allowed me to bring someone from outside the school I'd have played merry hell with it and turned up escorted by a "bodyguard", full suit, sunnies, earpiece et all.
